TEMPORARY PROTECTED STATUS (TPS)
Certain individuals currently living in the U.S. originally from countries considered unsafe because of political or natural disasters may apply for TPS and live and work in the U.S. if:
- They are a national of a country that has been designated for the program; and
- Are a migrant who has been physically present in the U.S. since a country’s TPS designation
The program is for a specified period of time but may from time to time be extended by the Department of Homeland Security requiring migrants to reapply or renew their TPS status.
It is important that to note that TPS status has no pathway to citizenship.
A TPS recipient may also apply for Advance Parole allowing them to temporarily exit and re-enter the U.S.
